Router table: how to use

Want to know how to use a router table? Here are some tips for making the most of your router table.

You do not need a miter channel. You usually slide your work along the fence. If you use a miter channel, then the fence should be square to the miter channel. Why bother?

You can create a template for sliding along the fence. This automatically levels the wood to get a square cut. You can make adjustments to the profile and depth of cut. The elevator router makes this easy.

Have you ever wondered how to center joints from edge to edge? Use this technique to make solid countertops, wide panels, or even make borders to surround your router’s table.

Let’s use a real example of oak edges on the table of an MDF router. Thickness 1 1/8 “thick. Oak edge 1 1/8” thick.

How can we provide a centered edge?

• Determine the size of the language. It has a 1/4 “groove. You want the sheet pile thickness to be less than half that. Therefore, the sheet pile thickness is slightly less than 1/2”. We use 1/4 “cutting depth for this example.
• We need a tongue less than 1/2 inch thick. Therefore, we know that the groove on the table is just over 5/16 inches on both sides of a 1 1/8-inch-thick sheet.
• Cover the top with a drill with a bearing to obtain a 1/4-inch groove. You do not want to drink a lot during the first pass. Therefore, the cutting depth is set to 1/8 inch for the first pass. ,
• Position the fence so that it is level with the direction of the drill.
• Cut the top and bottom of the top. Take your time and turn around. Make sure the workpiece is on the best router table. Or use the router at the top of the workpiece.
• Measure the thickness of the tongue. If it is more than 1/2 inch, adjust the depth of cut. Raising the router makes this easier. Note. Point both sides, so use half the setting for each side.
• Make the setting, lay the top and bottom again. Tongue thickness is now slightly less than 1/2 inch.
• Replace your cutting edge with a 1/4 “slot cutter. I always turn off the power of the router before changing bits!
• Feel the burr on the milling table next to the groove. Lift the router so that the bottom of the slot aligns with the bottom of the tongue. You may need support if the workpiece is large.
